was showing this to one of my students today, telling him how the coolest video game ever made was made in '83.

That game annoyed the hell out of me. It was one of the biggest scams to ever take quarters. The animation (just like Space Ace) was really well done (by Don Bluth at that), but there was no skill involved. I watched a guy play the entire game with his eyes closed at our local arcade once. Much like world 1-1 of Super Mario, it's all about knowing the timing of the play.
My fave from that time was Gauntlet and Cheyenne.

Agreed. Loved the look of D&D but as a game-player, it was frustrating because it didn't involve skill. I too loved Gauntlet. I remember being teased because I used the Valkyrie almost exclusively (the girl). I was always the last one left standing because she had the all-around best skill set.

I always played the Elf because he could kick ass at distance attacks.Agreed. Loved the look of D&D but as a game-player, it was frustrating because it didn't involve skill. I too loved Gauntlet.
