Justin's amazingly awesome German word of the day

Postby aquaphase » Mon Nov 17, 2008 10:59 pm

Recently (i.e. on our trip to the House of Mouse) I was reinvigorated with my affection for Deutsch. Some of you might know that I studied it for years (here and abroad) and even managed to get pretty damn fluent. Since I don't live in the Hill Country of TX, I don't get to use it that often. Drinking liters of beer and chatting TX liberal politics (auf Englisch und Deutsch) with a family from Arlington at Epcot, however, reawoken something in me that clicks my brain over to Deutsch-mode all the time now (much to the chagrin of squeezle).

While I was digging around the web today, I stumbled across one of the most kickass examples of vocabulary that the English language just doesn't do: entwicklungsmöglichkeiten.

Take a guess as to what it might mean (and it's not "the final solution" or "master race" or anything else that Dalya might answer)

That's just one mouthful of word.

not sure about the first bit (sounds like an air freshener) but it's something to do with possibilities.

that is an amazing word--and it doesn't have an English equivalent, but it means roughly "possiblities/opportunities for development."

entwitlungs = development
möglichkeit= possibilities, but leans more towards 'opportunities'

I know it's trendy, but I'm a big fan of schadenfeude. The sentiment and the word itself. I took German in HS but I never learned much. Though I can recite a song, to the tune of "she'll be comin round the mountain." Does every German student learn this one?

Ich bin auslander und sprechen nicht gut Deutch
Ich bin auslander und sprechen nicht gut Deutch

Bitte something something something
Bitte something something something

Ich bin auslander und sprechen nicht gut Deutch
