yeah that's how I roll, voted two weeks ago. I need quiet when voting on my trillion ballot measures for CA/SF.
I'm curious, how many things to other places vote on? I swear ours was 4 huge ballot sheets double-sided.

I just had the elections and maybe four local bond packages. Nothing state-wide. I don't think I've ever had more than a page front / back.I'm curious, how many things to other places vote on? I swear ours was 4 huge ballot sheets double-sided.

I knew it....I swear we vote on which tissue should be used around here..."aloe or lotion or plain" ugh and seeing as Texas is also a large state, I would think we'd be somewhat similar with the number of ballot items....double ugh.

Okay, all you voters, don't forget to go to Starbucks for your free cup of coffee (tall, regular coffee only, no fancy-schmancy latte mocha crap), and go to Dunk'n Donuts for your free donut, and then on to Ben & Jerry's for a free scoop of ice cream!
Anyone know of any more free stuff happening today - other than a new President, that is?

mass had 3 questions. the best one being for the decriminalization of marijuana, making possession of less than 1 ounce a civil offense. for those over 18, it's a $100 fine, and it can't be put on your record to stop you from getting into/getting financial aid from a school, or getting a job, or any of those wonderful things it interferes with now.I'm curious, how many things to other places vote on? the fact that SF/CA put so much on each and every ballot is starting to really piss me off. I mean this was a HUGE election year so why do we have to vote on all the other crap? I swear it's enough to make you crazy.

Re: I'm So EXCITED!!!!!!
don't be too sure. this year's scenario reminds me of 1992, where much of the same rhetoric was used, and the scenario was the same: the economy wasn't great, we'd had 12 years of Republican presidency, and Iraq was a frustration. "Change" was the issue, as was electing someone who was "the hope from Hope." i was a Clinton supporter then, and I helped to elect the "first black President," and Phyllis, I understand your enthusiasm!republicans are going DOWN! just saying is all.
but back to 1992. Clinton was elected, and it wasn't three months into his term that those who elected him turned on him, thanks in part to his absurd "don't ask, don't tell" policy. many felt betrayed by him. in 1993, Clinton couldn't get his health care plan enacted, even with a Democratic Congress.
then, in 1994, the Republicans swiftly reclaimed Congress. why? Because a lot of people were sick of the Clinton adminstration by then. Midterm elections often go the way of the party that's not in the White House, in part as a reaction to the two years previous. 2006 wasn't really that much of a shock; these things are the give-and-take of Democracy.
So the point of this is, the Republicans aren't "defeated" and aren't "going down." Do I think Obama will be elected today? Well, it's a close race. He certainly won't receive a mandate. I think it'll be even closer than 2000 and 2004 combined. Does it bother me if he is elected? Nope. The person in the White House has really no bearing on my day-to-day life.
I just hope those that have invested so much emotional expectation and hope into Obama come back into reality soon. I know I was sorely disappointed in Clinton because I was, surprisingly, once a true beleiver. I see a lot of people who are unwisely investing a lot in the man. It happened in 1992, Once he's in office and the realities of the position become apparent, that all of his talk about "change" will be met with resistance, and it'll soon be obvious that the man can't deliver all of these wonderful changes--and a lot of his own people will quickly become disillusioned.
I've chosen, for the most part, not to talk about politics here and in other places. Like Mere said, 2004 left me a bit disappointed and heartbroken, but not in this same way. I respect all of your opinions, and don't care to argue about my position, because I believe what I believe, you believe what you believe, and I know that bickering and arguing won't change anything. I prefer to take up the position of "disagreeing without being disagreeable." And, really, if Obama had sat it out in Congress another term or two, I'd seriously have considered voting for him.
But I leave you with a quote from John Quincy Adams, one that really says a lot about how I feel about today:
"Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost"

politics is not football; it's not an 'us vs. them' thing where one team has to win and another has to lose. if mccain wins, fine. if obama wins, fine. doesn't really affect the way i live my life. i don't get too emotional about such things.

Hell, 1972 left me so disappointed and heartbroken that I didn't vote again at all for 12 years! (yeah, and I was right about Nixon, wasn't I, but I'm not bitter) This is the first time since then that I've felt this kind of enthusiasm for an election. I loved Bill Clinton, and he will always have a special place in my heart as the only presidential candidate I ever voted for who actually won, but this time it's different. And I'm hoping to have another name to add to the list of winners that I've voted for - and this time I voted FOR, not just against.Like Mere said, 2004 left me a bit disappointed and heartbroken
