saying the old 97s lack passion makes me think you've never been to one of their shows. Don't take their portrayal in The Break Up as very accurate. That band plays their hearts out every show that I've been to, really get into their live shows, and the crowd is usually right there with them, singing and jumping and going batshit. seriously some of the most passionate rock shows I have ever been to have been with them. by the time they finish timebomb or 4 leaf clover(usually the songs they end on) they look so happy/exhausted. and yeah, rhett is a total heartthrob! ;)

dal, you know that's john from deathray davies' band, right? seem to recall you being a big DRD fan....
yeah for a while. they're fun but not much substance. so i lost interest.

dallas has a lot of stuff to do, but very little unique culture. most of the culture in dallas revolves around consumerism (restaurants, shopping). i like dallas, and i like living here. if i dont go to new york i proabably won't leave dallas. but it's not a creative center... dallas can be fun, but its pretty static. there isnt a unique, new style of music or art being developed here. once youve been to all the museums and been to the cool bars and seen the local bands and done all the dallas-y things (baseball, rodeo, 6th floor museum, etc.) there's not much left. that's fine--it can still be fun to live here, but its not conducive to creativity. and i feel like that makes people lower their expectations of what a good performer should be like.
i really couldn't disagree with you more. i want to know where completely new, unique, not-done-before art is being done (and god, don't say nyc), because honestly, it has ALL been done before. there are no completely unique ideas, because everyone has inspirations they draw from. sometimes, the directions they go in are interesting and innovative, but nothing is really 100% original.

and once you go to all the museums, cool bars, and seen the local bands of ANYWHERE, there isn't much left. what you just said could be transferred to any major city, and a chunk of the people who live there would agree with you. i've spent the majority of my life in boston, arguably one of the most "cultural" cities in the northeast, and i got bored hitting the bars of the south end or hearing the "next big thing" in music at the plethora of local music venues. if you're determined to be bored somewhere, you are guaranteed to be bored. it's different when you've lived in a place your whole life - you get used to it. you're used to the quirks of the people, to the feel of the scene. it makes sense you'd get bored of it, but that doesn't mean it's completely void of anything worthwhile. and going other places has always made me more grateful for where i came from.

as for dallas not being a place to be creative, i think that's a big bunch of malarkey. i'm stunned by the amount of gorgeous graffiti art on buildings that the city hasn't taken down. liveart was one of the coolest, most inspiring things i've seen in a long time. i've felt the urge to create more since i've moved than i had in quite some time back up in boston. the dallas i've seen is (mostly) unpretentious and just honest about its art. it is what it is, it's from the gut, it's not looking to impress, and most of what i've seen isn't all about the benjamins. i cannot say the same about boston or nyc. the average person can get into the art/music/creative scene in dallas without feeling like an idiot or an asshole. they can learn something, get into it, and develop their own creative voice. and i think that is one of the most amazing things i've experienced.

/end art rant. still besties?
dread stuff

speaking of douchebags, when I was in boston walking to some bar that was full of fine collection of dude-bros I was talking to katie's friend about dallas and the high level of db's and he went on and on about how it couldn't be as bad as boston. then they kind of proved it, even in the cool bars they pour into the street. it was one of those nice things you like to see while on vacation. like the time I was in Pittsburgh and learned that place is filled with white trash, warmed the heart.
