There are 15 or so of those films that I haven't seen, and I'm happy to say I have no sense that they are films I MUST see. The reason I've never seen them is that they don't interest me. Lawrence of Arabia, I tried, really I did! Godfather II - I didn't care that much for the first one, why would I watch a sequel? I don't care much for Marx Brothers or Charlie Chaplin, and I despise anything with excessive violence. (thank you for that psychological trauma Sam Peckinpah, I DID see The Wild Bunch).

So, I'm going to say I've seen them all. And I found Birth of a Nation fascinating, in the way a train wreck is fascinating.

I didn't even know that was possible. Have you actually seen a whole movie of either or just short clips? Because Duck Soup (MB) and Modern Times (CC) are two of my favorites of all time... Aahhhh now I have a craving to watch the scene in Modern Times where he's chasing the woman to wrench her conspiciously placed buttons... oh charlie, you slay me.

I watched Tootsie last night and I have no idea how it made the list.

the new list that's supposed to come out this week will be a revised version of the past lists, because it'll include things that have come out over the past 10 years. they're having some weird contest to "guess the top 10" to win some fancy tv right now, which kind of worries me -- does anyone think anything put out in the past 10 years is worthy of making it into the top ten?!?!

btw, i'm only about halfway through the list. unfortunately i have sworn off some of the movies for stupid reasons (it's a wonderful life for example - don't ask) so who knows if i'll ever finish it.

Word. AFI isn't capable of admitting that people really want to see crotch blows and jive talking grandmas. They probably felt like they had to put a comedy from the last half of the century in there, even though they despise what comedy has become (funny).

I think The Departed should go on there... but that's too recent to've reached a consensus as to how good it is. Clueless should also be on there - for script and costumes and being funny as fuck. Gangs of New York should at least be in the top 200. If City of God were an American film it would jump to the top 10.

I can't think of any of the recent movies I've loved, except foreign ones (everyone should see The Lives of Others -- incredible!) and old ones...

Possible that Lord of the Rings could make it. Oh, American Beauty! I bet that will be on there. Please, Lord, don't let Titanic be on it. No no no no no...

i agree with american beauty. all 3 lord of the rings movies were on the ballot (as was titanic and american beauty), so who knows what'll happen -- it'll probably be a bit different from the past lists just because of the time factor.
i never saw gangs of new york for some reason (and it's not on the list), but i think i like the departed less after watching infernal affairs (though it was still better than a lot of other movies that have been coming out lately).

And American Beauty too. I assume they have to give some considerations for movies that were groundbreaking, regardless of whether they're the BEST, right? Rebel Without a Cause sure didn't make the list because of the supurb acting.
I think they could easily bump Giant, because as far as I could tell it was just a Gone With The Wind rip-off, but with more boring characters.

at the time rebel without a cause was considered "realistic" acting. so was A Streetcar Named Desire. as in, "STEELLLLAAAAAAA!!!" the first thing we learned in my film class was that "realistic" is always subjective, so you have to consider the context.

I love Shawshank but I don't think there's anything that special about it besides the really good story. To be on the list, usually the movie has to hit every aspect of film (acting, plot, cinematography, sound, etc.) not just excel at one area. I know the acting was good but I don't remember any special cinematography, just general Hollywood style.

Film snobs will never vote comedies onto the list. Did anyone see Will Farrel's song at the Oscars?

I was about to say that I could see Rushmore making a showing on the list, but upon further inspection, any list of great American films that fails to include Saturday Night Fever is not worth our time.

A friend of mine said her son loves that movie and watched it all the time a few years ago. He's 14. I said, "Wow, the rape and suicide scenes are pretty heavy for a preteen." She said, "Rape? Suicide? The only parts I remembered were the dancing scenes."
