I got my first mac last christmas; an iBook (the last model before the intel chip). I have so much to write about it that I'll have to wait until I have more time.

I think the main reason why they are so good is that they design both the software and the hardware and the overall machine, so everything makes a lot more sense.

No doubts there. The real jokers are the companies (*sony*) that have made half-assed attempts at replicating Apple's integration. You end up with the disadvantages of both; clunky, bug-ridden, proprietary and expensive.

step one to becoming a "real" graphic designer is shrugging off the PC. Of course, if you have an intel Mac, you can always bootcamp it.

I really don't want to sound like a MS shill, but I havn't had any problems in quite a while. My work computer is totally stable and the home pc survived my hack-job of a rebuild and is running fine.

We'll get to see if this iMac "just works" tonight after we get some desk space cleared.

I am imagining turning it on and having a wash of light transform me into a black-and-gray wearing, mocha sipping, hipster.

We still have a Sony VAIO Windows 98 machine (upgraded from 95) and it came loaded with their "VAIO Space" interface. I only used it when I needed the computer to function as a telephone answering machine or fax and it came loaded with movie previews (The Craft and Fly Away Home-that's how old it it) that were pretty cool but with only dial-up available at that time, not too useful a feature to me.

It seemed pretty awesome at the time. It had a TV tuner and A/V input jacks on the front so my kid could play console-based video games on the computer or hook up the camcorder. Probably not such a big deal now. They did have really good customer service, too. They replaced my mother board when they shorted it out fixing the CD drive.

But I haven't looked at one seriously in a long time since I try to avoid Sony stuff now that they don't trust me to make legal copies of my legally obtained music CDs. (Yeah, I managed to make copies of stellastarr* and My Morning Jacket but I'm still mad at them.)

Back to Macs - The Apple Macintosh was the first PC I ever used. Monochrome monitor one, 3.25 floppy drive, no number pad on the keyboard - you had to buy it separately if you needed it.

Now that I know Meredith will be posting from a mac, I'm ready to join this forker army! Congratulations and forget the hipsters, it's really about the glamour. Red lipstick will look beautiful with that white monitor (not on it, natually)!

Just because all hipster doofuses love Macs doesn't mean that every Mac lover is a hipster doofus.

Ah, it seems only yesterday when I first set up my iMac. The night was long, spent meddling in the system preferences, mouth and mind agape at all the personilization possibilities.

Enjoy. You'll be deeeeeeeply in love by tomorrow.

I'm so predictable. (And now all the forkers know it!)

Disclosure: I'm at work, on a PC.
Disclosure: I was just tempted to use a sad face emoticon.

Thanks for the welcome.
