Music is a funny thing. It divides people more than religion and politics and causes a much wider range of emotions than the two combined. Now you, Mr. J, claim to be a professional appreciator of music. You've listened to probably thousands of albums at least. Some of them are good and some of them suck. But few stand the test of time that The Soft Bulletin has.

In any other medium, I'd understand why you were doing this. I'm a procrastinator extrodinaire. I wait until the last minute for pretty much everything. Except music. The Soft Bulletin may be better when expressed in a certain time period but it works just as well outside. Fact of the matter is, this record is one that gets inside you. Most people will remember it as indicative of the time period it was released but the album is bigger than that. This album, I believe, is one of those timeless pieces of music that you can pick up at any time and it will mean something different but the power of the emotion that it sets off does not diminish.

And if you have built it up so highly in your mind that you dislike it, so what. At least then you'll have finally heard it and you can get on to other stuff.

But what will probably happen is this:

You'll listen to it once the whole way through, paying special attention to everything and not be that impressed. You won't listen to it again for a couple days. Then you'll pick it up again and give it another chance. You will like it a little more. Repeat ad infinitum until you realize it's one of your favorite records of all time.

In the spirit of trying to be open-minded (yet again), I just listened to the Soft Bulletin again. It honestly made wish that I was listening to Together We're Heavy, and it's going to take me a good hour to get the vomit off of my ceiling fan.

Feeling Yourself Disintegrate just came on my random play, and made me want to listen to the album again for the first time in ages. Had forgotten all about songs like The Gash and Buggin'.
