Roky Erickson/13th Floor Elevators - You're Gonna Miss Me

Music, movies, entertainment, etc. Because James wanted it (and seems like a pretty good idea)

Roky Erickson/13th Floor Elevators - You're Gonna Miss Me

Postby Dalya » Tue Dec 02, 2008 12:21 am

Somehow I had never heard of the 13th Floor Elevators or Roky Erickson until this week, even though they're from Austin and really well known. But anyway I watched You're Gonna Miss Me, this documentary about Roky, last night and it's amazing. It's all about how he became mentally ill and how his family deals with it. It's really an amazing movie, period, music aside. You start to forget it's a documentary because it's so well made and it unfolds so naturally. I highly recommend it.

Thanks, Dalya. I ordered the DVD since, according to the schedule, it looks like the theatrical run is over.

A friend of mine took me to see Roky Erickson with the Explosives at Raul's in Austin around 1980. (That friend is now my husband.)

Even if you're not interested in the band the movie is great. The way it depicts his psychological state and slowly reveals its sources is really unique for a music documentary. It seems like the filmmaker set out to find out how he got so messed up instead of setting out to prove his previously formed opinion. It ends up being more about psychology than anything else. Although I now want to buy every 13th floor elevators album. They apparently invented psychadelic rock. Including the name.

Let me know what you guys think once you see it.
