I guess you can expect to see more commercials for gillette, pepsi and adidas during their games now.

how in the hell can they afford to pay him that much? isnt that more than the entire league is worth?

sky sports are reporting 500,000 pounds a week - 128 million pounds over 5 years. that figure would probably include his image rights etc.

he's being interviewed now, he wants to make a difference to the kids so they play soccer (note - not football  ) instead of basketball, american football and baseball.

AEG think that they are getting good value for money - an ambassador for MLS. Donovan sounds excited too.

Is this the start of the big name factor in US football with the changes to the salary cap? Figo to New York has been mentioned, wonder if Dallas could attract someone like that (or would want to).

Doesn't the guy who owns them own AIG? If so, that's how.

Actually, I think it's a marketing boon for MLS. Even though he's not the best player in the world (now or ever), his name is. He will put butts in seats. I think they're banking on him bringing people to the game.

He has a youth academy in LA. AEG made a good move, they just sold off their share of the DC team, they can focus more money into LA. Look to see NY and Chicago to probably make big signings soon.

i agree, becks will be good for promoting the game. however, it is a huge gamble to take but one that probably must be taken if the game is ever going to have major success in the states.

i still question the huge amount of money, if it is indeed in the $250 million range. in my opinion, becks alone will not be able to put the mls on the map. too much competition from the other major sports.

how about ronaldinho to fc dallas? anyone? anyone?

Which is precisely they paid him that kind of money...fantasy of women (esp soccer moms) from coast to coast...they'll be bugging their husbands to go to games, in which the husbands will trade off for going golfing/other sporting events....

Beckham = Money. Too bad he doesn't = winning.
