I happen to have an entire Leonard Nimoy album on my mp3 player.
As I understand it, he felt the need to compete with William Shatner's 'The Transformed Man'. Thought that maybe singing would give him the edge. Just wait 'til you hear his Ballad of Bilbo Baggins...
