As I understand it, he felt the need to compete with William Shatner's 'The Transformed Man'. Thought that maybe singing would give him the edge. Just wait 'til you hear his Ballad of Bilbo Baggins...

My favorite Leonard Nimoy is the one who hosted all those science specials in the 70s with the swanky polyster suits.
