Beirut

Music, movies, entertainment, etc. Because James wanted it (and seems like a pretty good idea)

Beirut

Postby NerfHerder » Thu May 11, 2006 12:50 am

19-year old from Albuquerque.

He plays every instrument.

Fucking beautiful.

It hits the two spots of the brain that Neutral Milk Hotel and Pilotdrift hit.

The debut LP, Gulag Orkestar, came out yesterday on Ba Da Bing! records. I highly suggest getting this disc or at least downloading a song or two from the mp3 blogosphere.

You bastard. All of a sudden you're in love with Beirut?

Leave it to a Kerry lover to flip flop.

Ooh, they're on my to-investigate list, ta. Had seen a couple of good reviews about them recently- shall listen to some songs in a bit.

Edit: I like postcards, and have so pre-ordered it. Kinda sounds like Jens Lekman and Rufus, but without the suckiness of Rufus :D

Have now cancelled my play.com order, and ordered it from America from badabingrecords.com for the pricely sum of £6.54! Crazy America and their cheapass cds.
Wish I could see him play at the Bowery Ballroom in July- with Jens Lekman as well! Feels like it's been ages since I've gone to a gig to see two or more bands that I love.

i hate to disagree (SHUTUP about that pedals1)

but beruit is boring.
i mean, i yawned. and then i yawned again.
people need to stop trying to be the next neutral milk hotel.
nobody's going to better jeff mangum.
it seems so insincere to even try.

I love Postcards From Italy immensely. The other two songs I've heard aren't as amazing, but the album is worth a purchase if only for that song.

Not especially fussed about NMH, so don't pay any attention to any comparisons to them.

I don't believe Beirut is attempting to be the next NMH because I agree that there never will be another Jeff Mangum.

But I do believe that other bands can hit the same spot that NMH did, if not all the spots. And, using Airboy as a prime example, people can get into Beirut that weren't into NMH at all. Is that difference not enough to at least argue that the two bands are different enough? I do believe so. And while I know nothing of the young man's true intentions, I think the music on this album is similar to NMH in some ways but certainly different enough that I don't believe Beirut was trying to be any sort of "next generation" NMH.

Wooo, Beirut are going to be supporting Calexico in the UK in November, so I had to just buy tickets. So three great gigs that week for me: Divine Comedy- 2nd, Sufjan- 3rd, and Calexico/Beirut- 5th.
