New Smashing Pumpkins single "Tarantula"

...Whilst not being a Pumpkins classic, it is growing on me.

I really like it.

I wouldn't expect a band so many years later to be playing the same exact thing...especially one that's been broken up.

I have high hopes for the new album.

Yep, that's the Pumpkins. Listening to it made me realize that - for all the ways they've been more than a band (as in just a band) to me - they're almost less a band than an era. It's funny because it reminds me of what they said about the covers they did for Areoplane - that they wanted them to be from "the Molly Ringwald era." I can't help but think The Smashing Pumkins already gave us everything they really had to contribute. I guess that's why I'm not very excited about the album. think it's gonna be more of the same. I was unhappy when they broke up but I feel like I better understand now why bands with reputations like this call it quits; they always have the problem of needing to be seen as evolving - but the other side of that coin is people thinking they've abandoned their roots.

I prefer it when B0lly wants to be in Cheap Trick rather than Depeche Mode.

I'm sure I was because I saw them every time I could, and by then I'd have been able to, but I have a bad concert memory. I remember Billy affecting a kiddie voice for the first few lines of Today, and I think that was the show where Jimmy Frog was running around as the Green Fairy? They pulled a bunch of people from the audience on stage, mostly bimbos, and none of them were even from Dallas? See, I remember stupid shit from concerts.

That really would have annoyed me.

- Mere "the nail in the Bono-is-a-dork coffin for me was when I finally saw a U2 show and he pulled up a model-type on stage and she gave him a yellow rose, and he wore her cowboy hat -- FAKE!" 1975

Reminds me of INXS at Edge Fest (pretty sure this was their last state side show, at least until they did that rock star reality TV bullshits). Michael Hutchins pulled a girl up from the audience and kissed her. She was ready to go back to the hotel with him I think, not sure he was prepared for the level of enthusiasm she showed. He covered - um - himself with his hat and walked off stage. I don't know if himself needed covering, but it was damn funny.

Live perfomance of a new song. I haven't heard anything except Tarantula from the album yet (this isn't on it), but I like this. I still wish he'd grow some damn hair but I guess he's balding natually and doesn't want it showing.

3rd. November, the Smashing Pumpkins are playing the Nokia Theatre (snappy title) in Dallas.

I'm jealous.

...I can't see them in the UK this year. They're playing Glasgow the same night that I'm going to see Sonic Youth perform Daydream Nation. Arse.
