The plight of shitty workch
The suffering of my main man roach got me thinking about the bullshits that I have gone through to get to my current position of leisure called my "career". List them out bitches, what have you done for the "man" that have warrented your suffering?
1. 1.5 days at a Taco Bell in Las Cruces, NM (fuck the TB)
2. 4 months at KVIA working teleprompt for the 6PM news
3. 2.5 years at Village Inn working as a busboy (thanks for the mono)
4. 1.5 years at Damon's in Waco as a "host"
5. 1 year at Damon's as a CEC (Clubhouse Entertainment Coordinator)
6. 2 years as a bitch-ass TA at Baylor university teaching over-privileged kids Constitutional Development
7. 5 years helping run KWBU (one of the best fucking college radio stations in the world RIP)
8. 1.5 years being a bitch for AOL writing music reviews and building websites.
9. 7 years working for Dallas Area Rapid Transit
10. 1 year lording over others at DFW Airport.
Fuck. it feels good to get that down in pixels. There has been various and asundry odd jobs in the middle (some I can talk about, some I can't), but that's where I've been.

1. water boy. ball boy. locker room attendant. dallas sidekicks. 88-96?97? I was offered the job of equipment manager while in college but it was gonna put some stress on my party life.
2. Blockbuster Kid. I wore the giant head costume at various openings and cotton bowl parades. off and on 88 - 92 ish
3. Staff. Assistant Manager of an indoor soccer center. I had the keys to an indoor soccer center. 94-98
4. KVUE-TV 98-99. 00-00 no real money. no set schedule. doubles are a norm. turn arounds into a double are the norm. the head shots while playing Turok on our breaks made it mostly worth it. oh, and the great friends i made on the way.
5. TXCN. I've had it pretty good here. Yeah there is the double and turnaround and what not, but i usually sign up for them now. 99-00, 00-now.

That'll probably beat mine.
-detassler (got on a bus at 5:00am to drive out to a corn field. Spend all day in said cornfield contracting sun poisening and pulling tassles out of every other row of corn.)
-Happy Joe's waitress (wore a sexist short-ass costume, honked a horn and sang happybirthday to patrons. This one might beat out the giant
blockbuster head.)
-Wendy's counter ( Worked here only because my friend did. Unbelievably, the costume was even worse than the happy joe's uniform with the huggiebear hat that was made completely of polyester.Smelt like mustard and pickles that year.)
-Fotomat ( if anyone remembers the booths in parking lots where you drove up to drop off film to be developed. Beside the danger of idiot teens doing donuts in the parking lot, you could have been robbed, kidnapped & raped, or killed.)
-Janitorial work in offices over the winters (brutal since my brothers and I got to work with ex-cons and one took a shine to me. I quit.)
-Edit: ooooooh, I almost forgot this one. Adventureland (I worked in the shitty souvenir shops for 1/2 of minimum wage, so I had to work double shifts to make the same amout as a minimum wage day. The owner was a scumbag.)
-Capitol Hill Children's Center (I liked this job, it got me interested in early childhood ed.)
-Babe's Restaurant (As a hostess.)
-Burlington Coat Factory (HATED this job, but met my best friend for life here.)
-Teacher (2-3 yr olds. Then kindergarten.)
-In home childcare.
Yep. A pretty interesting and pitiful resume

"Don't go to bed mad. Stay up and fight"
4 years of janitorial work at my mother's pre-school. this was my first job, given to me when i turned 12.
1 year at osco drug, mainly doing photo developing.
5 years at papa gino's (a pizza chain). i started off as a cashier, then became a grill cook, then a pizza cook, then a shift leader.
currently unemployed, waiting to graduate. i will pursue my dreams after graduation, and probably get my bartending license in order to be able to pursue my dreams and pay for health insurance and food and stuff.

1. Babysitting
1986 - 1992 and sometimes in college
Loved it and kids love me (usually)
2. Concession stand/ticket booth/usher employee, Hollywood Cinema, Lewisville, TX
Summer 1992 & 1993, as well as winter/spring breaks
I learned after one shift as an usher that I HATE PICKING UP AFTER SLOBS. Loved doing the concession stand. Loved the smell of popcorn and free movies.
3. Summer intern - Mary Kay Cosmetics HQ - Dallas, TX
Summer 1994
Worked in the factory making lip balm for 1 week, then promoted to training department/office job -- also got to work at biggest (and possibly most enthusiastic) annual convention in Dallas for salespeople
4. Blockbuster Music - Vista Ridge Mall
During school breaks in 1994-1995
Worked with a member of the Dooms UK and a girl who dated my first college boyfriend after me, and we bonded in our mutual disgust over him
5. TCU Magazine - Ft. Worth, TX
Summer 1995
I wrote the section about people marrying/being promoted/reproducing/dying. It was so boring. I rarely showed up for work.
6. Caravan of Dreams performing arts venue - Ft. Worth, TX
Feb - July 1996
Special events coordinator. Loved my boss. Loved this job. Was the witness for a couple's rooftop wedding. Named the coffee shop (Caravan of Beans) and got a $50 bonus.
7. Interceramic Tile - Marketing/Events Coordinator - Garland, TX
July 1996 - Feb 1998
First real job. First real promotion. First time to get let go. It was like Melrose Place there and I was getting let go to make way to bring back an old employee -- but she ended up leaving her husband and moving to NC to be with my first boss there, who was leaving his wife. . . so when they let me go, they had no one. Oops.
8. The Associates/Citi Cards - Communications Specialist/Public affairs Manager - Irving, TX
April 1998 - today
Eight fucking years writing newsletters/memos/speeches/e-mails and planning employee events and volunteer projects. I have been here over 25% of my life. How many of these days were just OK? A lot. Best part is tons of vacation time and ability to do a lot of volunteer work on the clock. Worst part is the rest of the time. LOVED my job for the first year or two, but it's been up and down ever since. Current boss stinks. I'm looking. . .

Let's see...
My mum and dad owned a newsagent when I was growing up, so as soon as I was old enough (i.e. tall enough to reach the till) I was put to work!
1990-1992: Paper round. Early mornings did not suit me.
1993-1995: Saturday girl in the shop- and then, when I'd passed my driving test, chief person in charge of going to the wholesalers in the van every week. Three grand in the back pocket, those were the days!
1995-1998: My parents sold the shop, so I was on that student staple, the bar job. Worked at various pubs at home and at university. Finally packed it in when one publican let someone who'd had far too much to drink cycle home (despite me insisting we should order him a taxi). My boss was mortified the next night when he found out this bloke was in hospital, having been knocked off his bike. Well, durr.
1998-2000: "Graduate Management Trainee" at a Ford dealership service department in Grimsby. I put that in quote marks because I didn't learn anything about management, because I ended up being a glorified delivery driver and sometimes service recptionist. Everyone hated me because I was being paid more than them, and the boss was awful and kept trying to get rid of me.
2000-present: I managed to get myself transferred to a sister company based in Oxford. They make software, mainly for the automotive industry. The company was brand new then, and I started off as a business analyst, before they created the graphic designer post for me in 2001. Since then, I've been completely stuck in a rut. There's nowhere for me to be promoted to (I'm the only creative person in the entire business) so it's stifling, and I haven't been challenged creatively for years. I've tried really hard to change things there but it's like banging my head against a brick wall, it just feels like I'm wasting my time..
2006: I've just had confirmation that I'm definitely going to university in September to train to be a primary school teacher! It's a 1 year PGCE course (post-graduate certificate of education) which will turn my degree into a teaching qualification. I've had the place conditionally since December, but they've finally confirmed I've met the medical requirements and got through the criminal records bureau check ok. I can't wait! Giving up work for a year is going to be tough, but luckily I have Russ's support 100%. I'm really looking forward to the challenges ahead.

MCO at WELF-TV23 on Lookout Mountain: The local affiliate of the Trinity Broadcast Network. I lasted about a month before a particular daily prayer-line caller asked me one too many times to pray for him to win the lottery. Also, having to watch shows like the 700 Club and Benny Hinn for 8 hours a day was.... unsettling.
Not to mention the Michael W Smith videos they throw in when there's gaps in the programming.
(Although seeing "Davey & Goliath" and "The Flying House" on Saturday mornings was kinda fun... and Dick Van Patten's cameo on the Paulist production "Insight")

I worked at Mc Donalds for one whole year.
Then I was a hostess at Chilli's for about three months (those bitches were MEAN).
I waitressed at Denny's for 2 months - I'm a TERRIBLE waitress. My dumbass manager told me I could only have one day off for prom instead of the whole weekend like I wanted, so I just didn't come back. Guess he showed me.
I was a vendor at the ballpark. Walking up and down the third deck steps carrying 10 pounds of soda makes you sweaty by my calves looked great. And that was the ONLY season since moving to Tx (in like 77 er summat) that the Rangers made the playoffs.
Then I went to work at GTE.net and I've been woth them (now Verizon) for ten years (crazy). The first three were in the billing call center where I was a mentor, which meant that all I did was take supervisor escalations because the real supervisors didn't like gettin yelled at. All the stress none of the pay. So I spent 3 years straight gettin yelled at all day.
But I'm much better now.

3 months waiting tables at Pizza Hut.
5 months waiting tables at a locally-owned Mexican restaurant.
6 months as a carhop at Sonic (ironically this is the job where I made the most money).
7 months (two summers + one winter break) at the Llano County Attorney.
3 months (one summer) at another attorney's office in Llano.
3 years as a private tutor.
1 year at car dealership.

Oh yeah, and I forgot about selling beer at the Bears games and a couple of concerts at Soldier Field. The concerts were ok. The Bear's games were exhausting (and cold).
And I worked with my dad putting child abuse cases in to the computer. That was awful and depressing.

I completely forgot about the summer I worked at the laundry where my dad was manager- I must have wiped it from my memory. Every day they'd get deliveries of dirty napkins, table cloths and chef whites from cruise ships, that had been in black plastic bags for days. Apparently they stunk, but becuase I can't smell I had to unpack them and sort them. That was slightly more fun than the calendar (big ironing machine) which scared the living crap out of me.
Anyway, I shall be officially handing my notice in at this job in a couple of months, now that I've had the official nod from UCAS that I've got my PGCE place. I can't wait!
