Texan or American?

Postby jbfromoc » Thu Apr 27, 2006 10:37 pm

I've always been fascinated that most people that I meet from Texas consider themselves to be Texans first and then Americans. I'm from California, but I don't refer to myself as a Californian. I'm an American from California. Now it may have to do with the fact that I was born and raised in Connecticut, but I never called myself a CONNECTICUTAN (and although I have been called a New Englander and a Yankee it was never as common as Texan). In fact, the only other place in the US that even comes close is folks from New York City calling themselves New Yorkers... but again... not to the level of TEXAN. Why is that?

And so our friends across the pond don't feel left out, are you English (or Scottish, Welsh, etc.) first and then British? Actually, Scots need not reply (or hunt me down)... I know the answer.

:
it's easy. Texas was an independent nation before she became a state. We had a rather bloody war of independence fought over her right to exist.

But it was a long time ago. You'd think calling yourself a Texan would have faded over time (or at least come second to calling yourself an American). Besides, you don't see many people from HOUSTON showing that kind of CITY PRIDE.

And what's up calling the Dallas Cowboys: "America's Team"?!

it's one of those things that if you aren't one of us you'll never understand.

and the "america's team" thing, it seems as if the national media made that one up.

edit:
wikipedia will save you somedays. that'll be $2.45 in research fees.

the now deceased tex schramn who was the general manager of the dallas cowboys for 30 years gave the cowboys the tag of 'americas team'. he also started the dallas cowboy cheerleaders (still the best on earth) and had the great state of mind to put the cowboys in the nfc east even though dallas is nowhere near the east coast. this gave the cowboys the maximum exposure in some of the most populated areas of the country (dc, nyc, and philly).

who would of thought in 1960 the cowboys would become one of the top sports franchises in the world. tex schramn, thats who.

Actually, many of them do, the poor deluded souls. Some even PRETEND that they hate Dallas as much as everyone else hates Houston.

I never considered myself a Texan FIRST. Or an American. I've always just been both, though there's something more distictive about being a Texan - being an American means so many different things that it almost isn't a useful distinction (at least in America).

Texan first.
And happy belated San Jacinto Day.

And as soon as my brother comes home from Virginia, we're getting the Come And Take It flag tattoo.

fc dallas and houston what-have-yas are going in together on a gonzales-like cannon that will stay at the park of the team that wins the season series each year.

I've only been in TX for about Image years (and yes, that is my arm), but it is quite a bit different from everywhere else in the union.
