I saw a clip from some show where the T-man was saying that a silent birth means that the mom is "allowed" to make noise, it's just that everyone else in the delivery room is silent.
I think having people lurking around me and no-one is speaking would totally freak me out. Jack and I always laugh that when Jeremy was born the doctor and the nurses were chatting about the earthquake that had hit mexico in between the pep talks to me, All my Children was on in the background, and a gal in the birthing room next door was balling out her husband.
And no-one ate the placenta,as far as we know.
