...someone can know both the definition of and the correct context useage for difficult words like "sardonic," "catharsis," and "macabre," yet canNOT grasp the basic rules for deciding between "your" and "you're," "its" and "it's," and, perhaps most disturbingly, "one" and "won"?
peopel on teh interweb scare me sometimes....

people in LIFE scare me. i learned these types of rules in 3rd grade, and there are highschool students who read and write on a fifth grade level. and i have a few teachers who still can't tell the difference between you're and your. it scares me. THEY ARE TEACHERS C'MON. its and it's probably bothers me the most, or when people use an apostrophe when it's not even necessary.
use. common. sense.
luckily my english teacher is well educated on such matters.

some people think phonetically or quickly or possibly make mistakes like that if they don't proofread. It has nothing to do with not knowing the difference in the these words and nothing at all to do with grasping "the basic rules" that govern the language. Maybe you are being a bit of an asshole by not understanding the difference. I make those errors all the time.

I think I'm being a bit of an asshole for expecting others to know the difference. I understand your point; I know that people tend to make those sorts of mistakes, especially when writing quickly--but at the same time, there's really no excuse for someone to not learn to recognize the difference and write accordingly.
ps. just to clarify, this post wasn't made in reference to any particular forker, nor to Rubbs. it was just a comment upon something I saw outside of the forker-worldwideweb....

its and it's is pure laziness. i do that all the time, not because i don't know the difference, just kind of like what rubbbbbbs said. i just get lazy with punctuation on t'internet. the wrong 'your/you're' and 'there/they're/their' annoy me though, mainly when someone is trying to make a smart comment

Laziness was what I was thinking too.
And a lot of people don't proof read.

laziness is a factor, yeah. when it's an error that appears more than once or twice within the same paragraph/post/sentence, it's hard to ascribe such errors to laziness.

These kinds of errors drive me crazy sometimes. Mostly because I DO know the difference and it interrupts the flow of reading something when I have to do a double take to figure out what the writer is really trying to say. These are more than typos - your and you're have entirely different meanings, as do its and it's, and there and their and they're. I don't think it's too much to ask that people who are writing for an audience use proper spelling and grammar - it helps those of us who are literate understand what they're trying to communicate.
Too much spell-checking going on nowadays if you ask me. Computers can't read, and they sure as hell don't know English grammar.

you'll probably not want to hear this...but when i took my E/LA/R teacher certification exam, out of 90 questions, only two were grammar questions...and one of them was "which of the following errors would not be detected by a spellcheck/grammarcheck program?" it stunned me to see that grammar didn't seem to be an important issue...

hm. this does bother me, but i don't necessarily think that it makes the person on the other end a complete idiot. a lot of people have issues with spelling and grammar, the same way a lot of people just can't do math. a lot of it probably is laziness, too. that's why i don't really capitalize or nuffin'. it also feels more casual to me to not capitalize. otherwise, i feel like i'm writing a cover letter or something.
in short: bad spelling/grammar is annoying, but relax, it won't kill you to suffer through it.

Well, that would explain a lot, starting with how that moron in the White House got elected. And here I thought it was too many people voting while drunk... but it's just ignorance.
