Wendy's combination of mediocre food, low(ish) prices and great service guarantees they will be second or third place forever. When you compare Whataburger to the 24 hour options elsewhere in the US (White Castle, Krystal), it's not even a competition.

I heard a Zagat guy on NPR - they're startign to rate fast food now - and he said that of the "mega chains" (Whataburger may not be one of them), Wendy's burgers ranked highest for taste.

I was watching this program recently about the major fast food places. Wendy's actually seem to come onto the market and shake things up by serving fresh burgers (not frozen), having it your way (before Burger King), offering alternative sides like the salad bar (first ever in fast food), and of course the frostie (developed just for them. That Dave Thomas sure knew what he was doing!
I remember Wendy's as a kid and it was a treat to go there, not to mention tasty. Sadly, I haven't been to one in AGES.

I won't say that Wendy's burgers are great but they are AMAZING for the price. If you were to order a bacon cheeseburger anywhere, it would cost you at least $5. At Wendy's, it costs one dollar. I'm not usually one for quantity over quality but I would much rather have five pretty good sandwiches over one overpriced burger.
they do have a good $1 menu. I always liked getting chili and either a salad or baked p.

I've always looked at the Value Menu as a "make your own combo" kind of thing.
I mean, even though this is America, they don't make combos with three burgers. My way, for the same price ($6), I can get 3 JBCs, A Buffalo Crispy Chicken Sandwich, Chicken Nuggets and a Dr. Pepper.
If that isn't an American meal I don't know what is.

i personally love wendy's. i'm all over the nugget/chili/fry-or-baked-potato combo. and the food is almost always fresh and hot, a concept that the folks at wataburger have yet to grasp...

Does that go for those $5 pizzas that I remember from a while back?
Wendy's is all right but when the $1 Menu made its debut you got "Biggie" fries or a "Biggie" drink for a buck, now I think you get small fries or a medium drink.
I agree with Phyllis - Whataburger rules. I really missed 'em when we didn't live near one.
