With the Civil War event going on and Steve on the "anti" side of the Hero Registration Act, it's not surprising that they martyred him. Especially after the polarizing event of Iron Man's squad killing Goliath in a skirmish with the anti-registration insurgents. That alone caused a lot of pro-registration heros to go over to the anti-registration side.

I'm sure this will blow the entire thing wide open.

but the question is, will he really be "dead," or will he return again, like Superman?

Well, unless it was just a S.H.I.E.L.D. synthoid that got whacked and Steve is actually in custody, he'll probably stay dead. I'm about 3 weeks behind in my reading, so I'll better be able to determine after a few issues. Marvel has a track record of not bringing non-mystical heros back from the dead. Hawkeye was brought back after the House of M thing, but that was determined to be an anomaly created by Scarlet Witch when she went crazy and killed him. Spiderman was killed and brought back last year, but it was figured out at that point that he is actually more spider than human and actually powered and driven by a cosmic force (The Great Weaver).

I think Cap is wormfood.

Well, to split some hairs and send the conspiracy machine reeling, all the press shit from Marvel is saying that Steve Rogers is dead, not Captain America. I'm just wondering who will take up the mantle.

If they are specifying Steve Rogers from the beginning then I would guess that Captain America has a chance to return. I don't think that you can ever top that debut against Hilter, though.
