I have not been both so intrigued at a post title and quenched by its contents in at least a fortnight.

But in response to your question, problems don't occur with Macs very often. I have personally not heard of anyone having any big problems with one, whether it be iMac or other product. Now, I'm sure there are people who have a problem or two.

Now, one problem you WILL have is with the Mighty Mouse. That little trackball on your mouse that you think is kind of weird but you'll eventually come to adore? It gets clogged with shit fairly easily. No two ways around it. You're going to have shit on your hands sometimes no matter how good your hand hygiene is. The downward scrolling, since it is the most common action, will become impaired a bit.

Now usually, this is when one would simply take apart the mouse and clean it. Not so with the Mighty Mouse. You can not take it apart. This makes cleaning not entirely as reliable. Because you can't really just open things up and clean stuff out, there are several different theories and methods you may choose and hopefully will work for you.

I personally turn the mouse upside-down, nab a cloth (wetted lightly) and press the cloth against the ball fairly hard. I then shake furiously. In every direction. I've also heard rubbing alcohol works better than water but I have not tested that.

But a three-year extended warranty is more expensive than buying a new mouse if push comes to shove.

I bought the 1- or 3-year(?) Apple Care plan because I was superstitious -- if I hadn't bought it, it would have exploded on my way home, but since I have it I won't need it.

I haven't needed it in 5 months.


My experience has not been flawless though. My iMac freezes up all the time when the screensaver or sleep functions come on. I *think* when I close out of programs completely, then log out, then let it sleep it doesn't -- but if the sleep function comes on and something was open, it has to be restarted.

The good news is that restarting it takes about 7 seconds.

I guess I can call Apple care about that, huh?

I believe in Applecare. Especially since our Mini is in a prime "gonna get a drink dumped on it" location on the bottom shelf of the end table between our couch and our chaise. Of course, we only use ours to watch stuff I've downloaded from the internets.

i got applecare too for the same superstition thing. if i didnt have it it would break. i havent had a single problem with mine since august and i dont even have virus protection. i think im gonna get a program soon bc ass holes are starting to write worms for macs, or so says my dad's computer guy. but im putting it off as long as possible.

I love the remote. I thought it was silly til I used it. And then I read in the manual that you could stick it to the side of the machine, yea!

I was thinking about the Apple Care in part because I though you could get the workshops only if you got it. But I looked again and they're just free for free. But now i'm not sure the workshops are for me. All I really want to know is the bells and whistles and the hot keys - I'm a hot key fiend. And it seems like the "getting started" workshop will bore me and waste my time, I don't need them to tell me how to connect to the internet and hook up a printer.

Mere, I've been meaning to ask you if you knew that if you get out of the car and realized you left the windows / sunroof open, you can put the key in the door, turn it and if you hold for a few seconds it'll roll everything up? And if you're walking to the car and you hold the unlock button, it'll open the windows / sunroof?

It's features like that I want to know about; I don't think that was even IN the manual, I just knew because I saw the sales guy do it. Then again, the Mac manual's probably a lot better than the Mini one (which won't even tell you it you have a spare tire or not).

I haven't really had a chance to work with it yet, we got home late last night. I did think it was cool that I didn't have to register for it; I just entered my iTunes UID / PW, and it registered and sent me an Email.

No. So far, any worms that have affected Macs have been stuff that makes you enter your password like when you are installing programs. So if you're not indiscriminate with that you should be safe.

Also, when Leopard comes out soon, I think you'll be able to restore pretty much anything you lose with its Time Machine feature.

He said, "It was a BMW thing. I guess they stopped doing it on Minis."

I haven't tried doing it to roll the windows back up -- maybe that half will work?

Maybe the remote is new; I think it's just for operating the video / audio functions remotely.
I'm pretty sure Steve Jobs sold his soul to the devil to get Apple the ability to throw out upgrades as fast as it does. Reminds me of this Onion Article I read last weekend:

THE REMOTE IS FUCKING GREAT.

It's mainly for music but you can also control DVDs, other movies on your hard drive and photos. Press "menu" on your remote to access the Front Row thingy. It's pretty easy to figure out (DUH ITS A MAC).

Of course you can control stuff without going into Front Row, too.
