I don't know what I think about this yet. Perry's pushing legislation that would require (see force) my daughter and other girls in Texas to receive this new cancer vaccine.

I'm going to read up on this drug as quick as I can. I don't know if it's a good thing or not.

But I reeeeally don't trust Perry's motivation.

I don't think it's a coincidence that money comes first in this equation and women's health comes second.

I don't think this is constitutional; HPV isn't the same as polio; it's not transmittable through common every day contact. Immunizations can only be required for the common good. Unless you take the tact that the cost of cervical cancer footed by the state is injuring hte public good, this won't fly. And if that's the case, and the state financial concern trumps people's control over their own bodies, that's a slippery slope.

I think I'm going to have to side with the nut job bible thumpers on this one. It's a great idea to make it available - but mandatory?

perhaps that's true...I guess my beef is the fact, this just feels all of the sudden and yet HPV is pretty much the cause of most getting cervical cancer.

I suppose I should just be happy that it's here and available now.

The kicker here, Phyllis me lass, is that ol' Gov. GoodHair is dictating a solution before the problem has even been defined. His "I'm-not-gay"-ness is telling the women of Texas that they have to get vaccinated (with a right out of the lab vaccine, BTW) before a whole mess of tests have been done to see if this really is the right course to take. To me, this sound an awful lot like the swine flu shitstorm that President Ford got himself into. The only difference here is that everything is OK, in Perry's mind, because it's "only" women that he's allowing the pharm companies to test on.

I'm not saying the vaccine is a bad thing. I'm just saying that there should be a bit more information available before it becomes mandated.

Speaking as a person who is missing a cervix, along with a few other parts I was rather fond of, I'd like to cast my vote FOR the vaccine.

I think the key here in making it mandatory is that the cost would be lower for the end-user. Public health clinics give the mandated vaccines for a mere pittance. From what I've read, to receive the HPV vaccine right now is in the neighborhood of $350 out of pocket.

My question here is - what about the boys? Call me crazy, but I don't think those girls are out there giving sexually transmitted viruses to each other. Does the vaccine not work on boys? Seems to me if we vaccinated everyone at about age 12, we could just put an end to the whole HPV virus.

p.s. "most" ovarian cancer isn't caused by HPV, just a significant percent. genetics is a bigger factor.

and most girls who get HPV will never get ovarian cancer - people with a healthy immune system can usually fight off the virus without medical help.

and boys get HPV as well as girls (which measn they can spread it to girls) and both sexes get the genital warts it causes therefore both sexes would benefit from the vaccine.

Oh, I know all about HPV, sir. (Cervical cancer, points at self) I meant I just hadn't yet read what Gov. Goodhair was up to. Now I have, and I still must say, I grudgingly approve. I will never trust his motives (money), but the results are positive. The crazy religious right would block this vaccine at every turn, so he's just done an end-around, and I say good for him. As I suspected, by making it a mandatory vaccine for school, that insures that the cost will be covered one way or another - by private insurance or public health programs. If Merck makes a few bucks in the process, well, I don't really have a problem with it.

For most of the women posting here, it's way too late for the vaccine, so to them I say, get your pap smears regularly. Yes, Jackie, they suck, but it is probably the most significant breakthrough for women's health in the last century. The fact that Georgios Papanikolaou did not win a Nobel prize speaks volumes about how women are valued in this world. By contrast, just imagine what would happen if someone invented a penile enlargement technique that actually worked.
