Looks like I'm gonna be spending a couple days in Paris when I go over next Feb. Anyone got hotel, restaurant, must see recommendations?

MONTMARTRE!

The Sacre Coeur cathedral is just beautiful, and you have the best views in the city from up there. (If you haven't seen Amelie, watch it (!) and look for the part where she gives Nino back his photo book at the top of a hill.)

When I went in 1999, we stumbled across a cool area on our last night there. I remember a bar called the Bar Bat (whose house specialty drink was some kind of fruity concoction that you might love like I did!) so I searched for it and found that the neighborhood is called Bastille.

I also enjoyed walking through the underground catacombs. Hundreds of thousands of bones and skulls -- real ones -- but they are so old that it didn't feel scary. Just neat and kind of kitschy. (Is that disrespectful?)

I'll think on it and let you know if I remember any other particulars.

:)

1. Plan for more than two days
2. Don't take the subway everywhere, you won't see as much of the city that way.
3. The Louve is bigger than you think. If you want to see everything, plan for three days there. Otherwise, check the Mona Lisa and the crown jewels and the Louis the 14th apartments, then everything else is gravy.

Ok, so that's more like "what not to do" in Paris.

Despite my best intentions, I always end up managing my time poorly on vacation, then feel like I missed something. Hopefully those catacombs will still be there when I make it back one day.

I only have 2.5 days tops cuz this is a last minute trip and I've booked my time elsewhere, but I'm sure I can pack it full to the top without trying too hard.

I've been to Paris...but it was like almost 20 years ago now...so I need fresh tips. This will be just a "taste" trip, I'll have to have the full meal some other time.

We'll see what we can and what we miss we'll catch next time. :)

You want to talk about poor time planning on a vacation to Paris?

We saved the Louvre until our last full day. Which was May 1. Which is France's Labor Day. Which meant no museums were open.

90% of the public transport was also closed for the day, so we did lots of walking. I mean lots. It was beautiful weather and people were handing out Lillies of the Valley all day, though.

Take one of the boats up and down the Seine. They're called Bateaux Mouche, i think. It's so nice to be out on the river at dusk with all the lights in the city on.

The eiffel tower is always worth the queues.

If i could go back i would probably just mooch about looking at the architecture. :)
