i think we should plan a group trip to that country. that's a really nice country, asia. or so i have heard from the asian-race people that i know, born and raised in that country. asia.

That's funny, because when people speak of Asians here, they generally mean Indian Sub-Continent folk. Confused the hell out of me for about a year.

That's funny, because when people speak of Asians here, they generally mean Indian Sub-Continent folk. Confused the hell out of me for about a year.
oh I'm still explaining the difference to friends over there..."no, we say native american, indians are from india...etc.".

Is "oriental" more (or less) acceptable there (to distinguish indo-asians from east-asians)?

yeah, although they generally prefer to use the actual country that their from....you hear oriental but mostly i hear people refer to people as japanese, chinese, thai, etc...

Now I'm thinking we should give NBC 5 the benefit of the doubt and assume that this is an oblique reference to Asia, the band, and the "country" is purely a state of mind.

Wow. I didn't realize it was still in common usage over there. I found most people in Asia hated the term "oriental". ("I'm not a rug!") They preferred asian or, like you said, their country of origin.

I don't hear it as often in the States as I once did.
