weird day

Postby Dalya » Mon Oct 30, 2006 8:12 am

my best friend from preschool-middle school got married today. i got half-drunk and danced the hora, then came home and studied US history for 5 hours straight.

now my brain hurts.

sleep or all-nighter?

i don't know what year the effing steam-powered loom was invented. grrrrr...

Ugh, I hate it when professors make you memorize years. Of all the things you learn in school, that's the one thing you never retain.

the only years i can remember are when theyre in the name of the event (i.e. war of 1812, proclamation of 1763) or really important (1777 articles of confederation written, ratified in 1781, US becomes an official country, constitiution ratified in 1788)

for some reason i CAN remember that the cotton gin was invented in 1793, but i can't remember that Nat Turner's rebellion was in 1832. why? i have no idea.

need to remember:
Common Sense published in 1776
Treaty of Paris signed 1783
Jay-Gardoqui Treaty of 1785
Alien and Sedition Acts in 1798
Clermont first steam-powered boat in 1807
2nd US Bank's charter expires in 1836 under Jackson
Republic of Vermont from 1785-91 - becomes 14th state in 91
Shay's Rebellion in 1786...

arg. test is in 40 min. kill me.

Like you'll need to remember when Vermont became a state. Pshh.

if i lived in britain and had more then 300 years of history to learn i'd shoot myself in the face. sucks for you guys.

no, it's cool. all our dates revolve around war and who we were invading, with some diplomatic intrigue and tactical information thrown in. maybe a few kings and queens too but then you get the excitement of beheadings and stuff

yeah, the only super-detailed stuff is 20th century. We don't tend to study the whole history of the country either; at school I did Romans, 1066, Tudors and World War One. There's a hell of a lot in between all of those.

Plus, as eebs says, it tends to be quite interesting.

I always thought the story of the one senator beating the other one to death on the Senate floor (just before the Civil War?) was pretty cool.

i didnt think he beat him to death. i heard he beat him with his cane and then the next day he recieved like 200 canes from people who, i guess, supported him.

cant remember at all who it was. we're probably thinking of different stories actually.

whats it called when they go up and read the phone book to prevent bills from being discussed? im totally drawing a blank... something with an F in it... i know it sounds funny... arg. anyway i think that concept is funny.

From your subconscious certainty of failure on this test, probably.

Gerrymandering makes the Democrats hide out in New Mexico and cry.

NOOOOOOO they wont to Oklahoma and it was because Tom Delay is a piece of shit!

Yeah filibuster. I knew it!

American history is interesting. For example, the French Quarter of New Orleans was actually built by the Spanish. Learn something new every day.
