And here I just took out my piercing in May.

This is funny: "Do whatever you want to your body, but I don't want to be subjected to it in the workplace."

Other than holding them down and tatooing them, how do you SUBJECT someone to your tatoos?

SF has been ahead of the curve on body art....I have a friend at the SF Library and she's covered too. I remember when I had to cover my wrist tat and wear my hair down over my piercings just to do the interview...then once I got the job....WHATEVER!

adding that she thinks academia has been more accepting of her body art than the corporate world would be.

So, Justin... how is it for you at work?

I take out my piercings every morning (just like I've done for the past 8 years), and I haven't worn a short-sleeved shirt in about 5 years. The stuff near my wrist peeks out often when I'm gesturing or slamming heads against walls, but there I still run into people who have no clue that I have tattoos.

I'm pretty sure there is a policy here against men wearing earrings, but nothing implicitly defined for tattoos. My uber-uber-boss, however, would probably come unglued (even though he's seen them several times).

well, my winning personality convinces most that I'm extraordinary, but, yes, some thing that I'm a normal run-of-the-mill office type worker.

I work with a lovely young woman who has a small, nearly invisible tatoo on the side of her neck, and another similarly discreet one on her ankle. She is so self concious about both of them that she rarely wears her hair up, and she only wears a skirt if she can wear boots with it.

One day she was telling me about her discomfort, and I was like
"Damn, that's nothing, girl! You should see my friend Justin! And he works at the airport - I'm surprised he hasn't been detained and sent to Gitmo by now!"

She was amazed by my graphic description of Justin's body art, and a little bit afraid too I think.

yeah. that's funny when you talk to people that have gone to the trouble of getting tattoos, and then stress about it. i do, however, have one at the base of my back that is totally red with no other color -- it's a painting that dolan did in kindergarten -- and once in a while if i lean over and my shirt comes up in the back, people are all like, "dude! you're bleeding!"
