Fuck 2010

so i just got finished watching 2001: A Space Odyssey and 2010: The Year We Make Contact.
if you haven't seen these movies, 2001 is elegant, mysterious, and beautiful. It ebbs and flows like a great symphony.
2010 is a stereotypical 80's crap movie. Starring Jon Lithgow and Roy Scheider (the guy in Jaws), it's directed by Peter Hyams (best known for two Jean Claude Van Damme movies and the Schwarzenegger Armageddon movie, "End of Days").
this movie could not be worse. where 2001 is obscure and thoughtful, 2010 hits you in the face with Cold War politics.
whatever.

I think 2010 is
slightly above average for an 80s sci-fi-action pic. It only feels so damn crappy because 2001 was groundbreaking in a thousand ways. Imagine how many more people would hate Godfather III if Godfather I and II had been a single movie. Also, the second and third books are not as good. So some of the blame goes to Arthure C Clarke.
Any movie with Roy Scheider needs Robert Shaw. I also love that John Lithgow starred as
Dr. Walter Curnow and
Dr. Emilio Lizardo/Lord John Whorfin in the same banner year of 1984.

I agree with Sam, it is very hard to follow perfection. There was no way in hell that 2010 could even begin to approach 2001 (to begin with, they just didn't have the director).
Besides, I'm guessing Clarke just pumped out 2010, 2061, and 3001 just to buy goodies for his little Sri Lankan boys.

I never read 3001. Wasn't peace on earth achieved at the end of 2061?

pretty much, but the end of 2061 and the whole of 3001 pretty much lay out that Earth really wasn't that important.

So tell us. . . if you had to choose between Phyllis and your boy child, which one would still be joining you for pizza at The Tomato?
