I found most people in Asia hated the term "oriental". ("I'm not a rug!") They preferred asian or, like you said, their country of origin.

I don't hear it as often in the States as I once did.
My mom still lets a comment about "the Orientals" or "a nice Oriental lady" fly. When I correct her, she rolls her eyes and says, "What, do I call all of them Chinese???"

Or. . . you can go the route of my Great Uncle Ray and call them "Caucasians."

that's ok, when i corrected my grandmother, she went to her dictionary (published some time in the 1950s) and felt vindicated when it said that 'oriental' referred to people asia. how very occidental of her :roll:
