My mom still lets a comment about "the Orientals" or "a nice Oriental lady" fly. When I correct her, she rolls her eyes and says, "What, do I call all of them Chinese???"I found most people in Asia hated the term "oriental". ("I'm not a rug!") They preferred asian or, like you said, their country of origin.
I don't hear it as often in the States as I once did.
Or. . . you can go the route of my Great Uncle Ray and call them "Caucasians."
