Cowboys coach Parcells quits NFL

Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells, a two-time Super Bowl winner, has opted to retire at the age of 65.

Parcells is best known for guiding the New York Giants to three Super Bowls and winning two in 1987 and 1991. They lost to the Baltimore Ravens in 2001.

He joined Dallas four seasons ago to restore glory to "America's Team", but failed to steer them to a play-off win.

"I'm in good health and feel lucky to have been coached in the NFL for an extended period," Parcells said.

"I leave the game and the NFL with nothing but good feelings and gratitude to the players, coaches and other people who have assisted me."

The announcement came 15 days after the Cowboys' season ended with a heartbreaking play-off loss in Seattle.

Quarterback Tony Romo botched the hold on a short field goal with a little more than a minute left and Dallas went down 21-20 to the Seahawks.

They lost four of their last five games, including the final three, after holding a two-game division lead in December.

Dallas have not won a play-off game since 1996, easily the poorest run in the history of a franchise that has been to a record eight Super Bowls.

Parcells had been expected to continue into a fifth season in charge of the team, and his 20th as an NFL head coach.

I'm glad to see him gone but I'm worried about JJ's ability to hire a new coach. His record on hiring good coaches is horrible.

Actually, whoever wrote that original factoid is incorrect. Parcells has been to three superbowls, true. And the Giants have been to three and won two.

But Parcells' third super bowl was with the Patriots, when they were busy losing to the Packers with Leadtoe at qb. He was also interviewing for the NY Jets job during Super Bowl week.

It should be said, the Giants were quite lucky to win both of their Super Bowls as well, especially the second one, where they beat the greatest choking team of all time, the Buffalo Bills. But there's no question Buffalo was the better team.

ha. i was done with bill parcells when he left the patriots. he's only retired about four hundred times already. i'll believe it when i see it. (re: 8 days after leaving the patriots to retire, he unretired and had a new coaching job.)

Thing is, the Giants were the first professional football team I saw play on TV. Around the 2nd quarter there was a fumble by the other team. The entire Giant team, I mean all 11 players, jumped on the pile of about 4 or 5 opposing players so the mass was just huge and ridiculous. I laughed for hours. And thusly the Giants became my favorite team.

I can't root for the Bengals because of that dumb "WHO DEY" chant. The Browns will never make the playoffs as long as I live and the Steelers fans around here are as stupid as the Bengals fans (but don't have a slogan to chant).

But no, the Bills were not that much better in the Super Bowl. If they had that much better of a game they wouldn't have needed a last-second field goal. The Giants just did what they had to do under the steady arm and brain of Phil Simms.

Oh no, the Bills were the better team. But as we all know, the better team doesn't always win the big one. In the Bills case, they have nobody to blame but themselves. The Giants controlled the ball, and good on them for doing so, as it was really their only chance to do so. The New York Jets beat the mighty Baltimore Colts back in '69, but certainly they weren't the better team.

I guess it's all subjectinve, because it only matters what happens on the day. In that respect, I guess they were the better team. Doesn't matter though; my questions were answered; I hate bandwagon jumpers for various teams, and you have proven not to be so. Thanks.

When the Cowboys beat them for the second time, which was the fourth straight Superbowl loss for the Bills, a guy in my dorm wing made a poster, re-naming them the "BiLLLLs" Hilarious.
